Rakshas
(Rakshasas - sanskrit: the damaged) (Rakshasis (female)
Spirits that can either be peaceful, like the Yakshas, or, as titans,
be the enimies of the gods. Alternatively they can be nightly demons
and thus be the enimies of mankind.
They closely resemble the Pishacas (demons of the will-o'-the-wisp).
Their lords and leaders are Ravana and Kubera.
Being the enimies of mankind they are the counterpart of Vishnu in his Avataras.
They are shapeshifters and can thus change into any
shape or appearance they like.
Those who are said to be the children of Rishi (sanskrit: Seer, wise man),
Kashyapa(sanskrit: turtle) and of Khase or of Maarishi Pulastya (Seer, wise man)
dwell in Bhuvarloka (sanskrit: World of Air) or
Patala (sanskrit: Underworld, ground that sunk down).
They are pictured dog- or birdlike, corpulent or like skelletons.
