Wedderborg![]() The Wedderborg or the House at Wedde, Groningen was once a real castle. Now it is a small but high building with a staircase tower. The house dates from 1362, but the present building was built between the sixteenth and nineteenth century. In 1530 Charles of Gelre commanded Berend of Hacford to enlarge and alter the castle. Some remains of this are still visible at the edge of the moat. ![]() At the front you can see the remains of a square tower.
At this house once lived a nobleman who tyrannized the villagers over. He stole all their land and other possessions, till the villagers got sick of it. They captured the lord and chained him to a pillar. Every day the villagers set food for him, but every time he wanted to eat it, the food turned into lice. Eventually he perished of vermin.
This nobleman still haunts the cellars of the Wedderborg. At night he walks to and fro, rattling his chains.
