Borg Verhildersum

Borg Verhildersum carries a name that descends from a certain Ver (= woman) Hilde(rt), so a Lady Hilda, who nobody knows. In 1398 an Aylko Ferhildema is mentioned, who was also called Aylko Onsta, and lived at the Onstaborg in Sauwerd. A 'borg' is a castle in the province of Groningen, and means 'burgh', more or less that is. The borg was rebuild in 1514, and was separated from the Onstaborg in 1587. The Starkenborg family came to live at the house, and it became one of the most important houses of the Marne area. In 1792 the building got a new façade, but then the two wings and the gatehouse were already gone. The Frima family sold the house in 1953 to the municipality of Leens, and is now a museum.

Verhildersum, a small fortified house with only one storey.

On the driveway of the house you can encounter the shades of three women dressed in white, but nobody knows the story behind these ghosts.
