Valkenburg Castle![]() Valkenburg is the only castle on height in the Netherlands. The castle was build on a natural hill, and its map and its construction are based on the character of the ground. The first house was a large, heavy living tower, which was destroyed in 1122. During the rebuilding the house became larger, and in 1200 another tower and a ring-wall were build. In 1329 the house was destroyed again, this time by the Dukes of Brabant; and again in 1672 by the Orangists in order by Stadtholder William III. The people of the village of Valkenburg used the stones for other things. In 1924 the ruins were consolidated and are now one of the main attractions of Valkenburg. The headless lady wanders around in a distant part of the ruins; sometimes you can hear a jingling. It is the lady who is counting her money, which is her part of a treasure. ![]() High upon a hill the ruins of Valkenburg Castle look down upon the village. |
