Tongelaer Castle

Tongelaer was first mentioned in 1282. There is nothing left of that old house. The oldest remaining parts of the present house are a square tower dating from the fifteenth century that belonged to the gatehouse, and a part of the moat. The wings that surround a square court date from the eighteenth and the nineteenth century. The area around the castle, and the castle itself, has a very gloomy atmosphere. There is not much fantasy necessary for believing that the place is haunted.

The ghosts of Tongelaer are a black knight and a blond maiden, called Helwig. The maiden was a niece of a former lord, Herman II, and was in love with the black knight. The knight asked the lord of the house for her hand, but it was refused. Then he decided to kidnap the girl and take her away. When he was on his way to do so, Herman killed him. The knight's brother took his revenge by destroying the castle and the surrounding area. The house is still haunted by the two. The lady has been photographed, and two parapsychologists had even a short conversation with her through an ouijabord.

The oldest part of the house is this tower, where the ghost of the maiden has been seen.
