Ravensteyn Castle![]() Ravensteyn Castle or the House at Heenvliet was build by the lords of Heenvliet. Nowadays the house is a ruin, surrounded by a large park. The Beggars of the Sea set it on fire in 1572, and it was never rebuilt again. Instead of rebuilding it, a new house was built for the lords of the ambacht. After 1572 it was only used as a prison. The ghost of Angelus Merula, a priest who was suspected of heresy, and was locked up in the castle, haunts the ruin. He was condemned to death, but before they could execute him at the stake he dropped dead. In the cellars there is a small room covered with a dome-shaped vault. A part of a column with a chain attached to it still remains. There you can meet the ghost that is all clad in black. ![]() Today the ruin is an impressive object in a large park. |
