Genhoes Castle![]() In Oud-Valkenburg in the south of the province Limburg lies a very interesting castle called Genhoes. The biggest part of the house dates from 1500, the north wing was build in the middle of the eighteenth century on older foundations and the west wing is partly fifteenth century, partly sixteenth century. The first house was build there in 968. ![]() The entrance part of Genhoes. Genhoes is the most haunted house of Europe. There were 40 entities counted in the house, this is an unequalled number, even Glamis Castle in Scotland hasn't got so many ghosts. In one of the rooms Herman van Ghoor, Lord of Oud-Valkenburg killed his neighbour, the lord of Schaloen Castle. Herman still haunts the room where he commited his crime; baron Georg von Thunderfeld, fieldmarshall of emperor Charles VI is an eternal guest;and Marie van Pelzer Berensberg, lady-in-waiting of Marie-Antoinette is still present. Every three months a strange creature haunts the cellars, making a lot of noise. In 1966 the painter William Halewijn came to live at the castle and with him came a lot of ghosts; some were family, some were models. ![]() The house as seen from the road to Valkenburg. |
