Boxmeer Castle

From the original castle of Boxmeer is nothing left than a few foundations. Nobody knows how it looked like at the time it was build. It must have been build around 1200. The Duke of Alva destroyed the house in 1572 and in 1575 it was besieged again by William van den Berg. The latter one rebuild the house in 1578 and in 1780 it was demolished and rebuild as an impressing manor with two protruding wings with corner-pavilions. Only one of those pavilions remain nowadays and form a part of a monastery.

The only thing left of the castle is this corner-pavilion.

12 December 1769 John van Mijnsbergen, lord of the castle was killed with an ax by the son of the former landlord who was fired because of stealing. This Joseph de Greef chopped the body into pieces, tied the parts to rocks and threw them into the river. After months the parts were discovered, but they never caught the killer. The ghost of the killed man still haunts the place looking for his murderer.
