In 1785 the house was sold to Johann Philip de Nerée, and was converted the very same year, made use the material of the old walls. the way the house looks now, dates from the first half of the nineteenth century.

Babberich House is build with two L-shape wings.

There is a famous story going on about this beautiful house. One evening a maid was alone at the house, when she heard a noise. After a short investigation she discovered that six robbers were breaking in to the house through one of the windows of the cellars. She didn't loose a moment, took a sword and when the first man came in through the window, she chopped off his head. The others asked what was going on, and with a manly voice she told them to hurry and come in. One after the other came in, and the maid chopped their heads off one by one. Only the last one saw what was going on, and before the maid was able to kill him, he flew.
Later when the lord and lady of the house returned, and found out what has happened, they were very glad and rewarded the brave maid.
The ghost of the maid is still present at the house, protecting the occupants and their possessions. So beware, gentlemen burglars, don't break in at Babberich House, it will cost you your head!
