Agimont CastleAgimont, or Canne or Neercanne as it is called now, is a so-called terrace castle, which is unique for the Netherlands. It is build on several platforms against a hill. The present house was build in 1698 on the foundations of an older castle that was destroyed several times before. The gardens were very famous, even Csar Peter the Great visited the house in 1717. The Baroness Von Dopff came with her coach from Maastricht and encountered a procession of St. Servatius. She disturbed the procession by riding right through it. Soon after that a thunderstorm appeared and it was so heavy that the coach had to seek shelter in a cave. Suddenly the cave collapsed and buried the whole thing for ever. Only on heavy, stormy nights the coach leaves its rocky grave and rides the roads again. ![]() Agimont castle is build on a terrace. The gardens are made on a lower terrace. |
